To grow with hydro - plants in water (hydroponics)
Vi start off with the most effective grow method there is, Hydroponic growing!
Hydroponic growing means that you grow your plants in water and nutrients. Sometimes hydrograins/clay pebbles, Rockwool cubes or coco is used as medium for hydro grows. These mediums are completely empty when it comes to nutrient value which means you have to feed you plants with nutrients from day one in your hydro system.
When you grow with a hydro system it is very important to be exact and careful with the pH and EC values throughout the grow. To find out what pH your plants need, the easiest way is looking online.
For example, strawberries like it when it's about 5,5-6,5 in pH while tomatoes prefer between 6,0-7,0. To be successful with your growing you need to keep a close eye on these values so you don't damage the plants.
So, what is the EC-meter for then?
The EC-meter helps you control the nutritional value on the water you give your plants. As an example, strawberries will thrive if the EC is 1,4 under the growth phase and 1,6 during the bloom/fruit phase.If you are a beginner it is always easier to mix the nutrient solution in a bucket before you put it into the hydro system the first couple of times. When you get the hang of it you can mix the nutrient solution directly in the hydro tank.First, add the recommendet amount of nutrients according to the feeding schedule.
Mix it well and measure the pH value.If it is too high, add a couple of drops of pH- and mix well, wait 3-4 minutes and measure again.When the pH is good you can measure the EC value of the nutrient solution.If it is too low you can add a bit more nutrients to the water and if it is too high you have to pour more tap water into the tank.
Usual methods for hydro growing
Works by passing nutrient solution over the roots of the plants. The plants are placed on a "plant tray". Usually a spreader mat is used to get the water flow even. Plants are usually put in big rockwool cubes called start cubes.
The water is pumped from one side of the NFT onto the plant tray and then flows down into the tank on the other side after passing over the plants roots.

Is growing in "fog". Most of the aero systems har special sprinklers that will produce a "foggy" environment with the nutrient solution around the plants roots.
Many growers thinks that this is the best method of hydro growing.

Ebb and flood
Is growing in "tide". Just like the natural rythm with the tide, ebb and flood-systems work by filling up the tank on top with nutrient solution and then let the water flow back into the tank below

Deep water culture(DWC) is a method where you suspend the plant roots into nutrient rich, oxygenated water.
Bubble bucket = Probably the most common and easiest hydro system you can get your hands on.
You oxygenate the water in a bucket with lid with an air pump and air stones. You then fasten the plant in the lid so the roots are suspended into the nutrient solution.

Step one before your coco grow is to put your seeds or clones in Rockwool cubes or a small pot with coco.
The first 7 days it is enough to water the plants with regular tap water that you pH adjusted to 6.0 in pH.
After a week you can re-pot your plants into bigger pots with coco. Now you have to choose what kind of pot you are going to use. You can grow in regular plastic pots but if you want a better harvest you should use for example Smart Pots, they let the coco and roots breathe through the special material they are made in.
Once you re-potted your plants you have to start feeding them nutrients every time you water them.
Coco is a "dead" medium that does not contain any nutrient value, just like hydrograins/clay pebbles.
To find out what the dosage should be you need to check your nutrient makers recommendations on the feeding schedule.
When your plant has grown enough it is time for the bloom phase and you can keep on watering as you have done during the vegetative phase.
It does not have to be harder than this to grow in coco and the result will be much better compared to regular soil growing since coco is a type of hydro growing.
Keep this in mind during your coco grow:
* Add nutrients every time you water the plants.
* Always adjust the pH of the nutrient solution to the pH your plants thrive in.
* Remember that you will have to water the plants more often than if you use soil as medium as coco dries faster. Make sure your plants does not dry out completely and check them three times daily until you learn how often you have to water them.
* Another important thing is to not water the plants too much. Make sure that the coco dries to 90% between the times you water them.
You can easily see when it's time if you make sure that the first 3cm from the top is dried out before you water the plants.
Simply put, you should water your plants just before you see that the leaves start to hang. You have to get a feeling for when that is.
When you are about to harvest coco plants it is important that you flush the plants. This is done by only giving them clean pH-adjusted water without any nutrients or vitamins in it. The flushing should start 7 days before the actual harvest.
